How does prepaid cell phones work ?

I want to buy a prepaid cell phone because my parents do not want to buy me one but how do they work ? Do I just buy a prepaid cell phone and a card ( like the 15,20,25,30 ). I don’t have to pay like a extra fee or is just that simple.

    It works like
    If u get the 25 cent plan it will Take 25 fence out of your account every minute and if u get the 1 dollar mobile to mobile it well take 1 dollar out of your account every call u make and it don’t matter how long u talk and the $3 unlimited plan will let call anybody for $3 dollar and for the rest of the day it is unlimited.
    The messaging plan are 5.00 for 200 text and 10.00 for 1000 messages and 20.00 for unlimited messages.
    The data pack are 1mb for 500 and 100 for 20.00
    It’s a really good deal because with a plan u have to pay a cretin amount of money for 2 years and if u brake the contract u have to pay money also when
    Also walmart is where I bought my phone
